Judith Gillespie Chief Constable Cap

Date:

2009

REF:

NIPC/GIL/BOX1(5)

Scope and Content:

Chief Constable’s police cap belonging to Judith Gillespie. This cap was specially made for her appointment as temporary Chief Constable in August/September 2009. Decorated with Police Service of Northern Ireland badge, and double row of ribbon laurel leaves on the peak. “Upon my appointment to Assistant Chief Constable [in 2004] there were no female caps in PSNI clothing stores as no one had ever imagined such things might be needed! …I had to wait about six weeks after my promotion before my Assistant Chief Constable’s cap was specially made and available. So, I was determined when I was temporarily Chief Constable that there would be female caps made available so that any female successor wouldn’t have to wait like I did." (Judith Gillespie, 2021).
